Meet our Doctors

Owner of Roots Chiropractic & Chiropractor
Dr. Matthew C. Ziesemer, D.C.
Dr. Matthew Ziesemer is a native of Caledonia, Michigan. He graduated salutatorian of his class from Caledonia High School in 2003. The pivotal moment in his life where Dr. Ziesemer knew he wanted to practice Applied Kinesiology (AK) Chiropractic, happened to him while in high school. During Dr. Ziesemer’s senior year, he separated his shoulder and a medical doctor told him that his arm would have to be in a sling for 6 weeks. He didn’t want that and knew there must be something else he could do, so he saw Chiropractor that specialized in Applied Kinesiology (AK). And that very same day of his appointment with the AK Chiropractor, Dr. Ziesemer went on to play golf and his arm no longer needed to be in a sling.
He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Life Science from Logan University in April 2006. He went on continuing his education at Logan College of Chiropractic, earning his Doctorate in April 2008. During his time at school, he attended over 400 hours of Applied Kinesiology (AK) coursework, studying and learning the AK technique. Following his graduation, he started his practice in 2008 at AK Chiropractic Research Center in Holland, Michigan. During his time there, he studied AK heavily along with practicing the AK techniques for over 14 years. In summer of 2022, Dr. Matthew Ziesemer decided to embark on a new journey and start his own practice in the city of Zeeland, Michigan, called Roots Chiropractic.
Dr. Ziesemer’s drive and determination accompanied with his passion for helping others, really taking the time and caring for his patients, finding the “root” cause of a problem and correcting the issue(s), is what sets him out from the rest. Using a drug-free, natural approach by searching for nutritional deficiencies within the body and providing AK treatment and supplementing the organs where and when needed, this is how Dr. Ziesemer firmly believes he can help others reach their optimal health and well-being, enjoying life to the fullest.
Dr. Ziesemer is happily married to Nicole Ziesemer, over 10 years together. They built their home in Grand Haven, Michigan and reside there with their four children: Blakeley and Cade (6.5 year old twins), Hudson (4.5) and Asher (2.5), along with 3 cats: Snowy, Winter and Sprinkles. Dr. Ziesemer enjoys spending time together as a family with his wife and children in his free time. He loves being active with them doing anything outdoors regardless of season, whether it’s at the Grand Haven State Park on the beach, boating, riding rollercoasters or water slides at Michigan’s Adventure, visiting Lewis Farms and feeding the animals, swimming in the pool, jumping on trampolines at Urban Air, making homemade sled runs and sledding in the winter, building a snowman, going for quad rides or just being silly and soaking up every moment because these early years with the children go by so fast! Dr. Ziesemer loves being active regardless who he is with or where he is at, and is always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Let’s uncover the root cause of your problem/illness, instead of just treating the symptom(s); healing from the inside out, allowing you to live your best life possible!

Chiropractor
Dr. Simon C. Bokma, D.C.
My name is Simon Bokma and I am one of five doctors here at Roots Chiropractic. My personal roots are in Grand Rapids, where I grew up in my family of eight. Growing up, my family and I got so much relief through chiropractic care; that was the start of my journey to becoming a chiropractor. I got relief from nightmares when I was a year old with a simple change in my diet. The holistic treatment of the body was the theological approach to health that I fell in love with from a young age; patient-centered care getting to the “root” of the issue instead of symptom-based care. My academic journey after high school lead me to IWU (Indiana Wesleyan University) where I met my now-wife. I later followed her to Logan College of Chiropractic where we grew closer, married in August of 2022 and we have our daughter, Mabel together. My exposure to AK technique has been fascinating and captivating with the holistic approach to the body. It has allowed me to treat in a way that addresses the patients' problems with specificity. I am excited for this next chapter in life that the Lord has set for me and my family at Roots Chiropractic.

Chiropractor & Health Coach
Dr. Dana B. Huisman, D.C.
Hey everyone, I am Dr. Dana! My first "job" has been a mom to my four kiddos for the last 23 years. My older two are out of school already & my younger two are at Zeeland Christian Schools. Along with my husband, Adam, we attend Graafschap CRC where I teach Sunday School. We have our own zoo at home - averaging around 4 pets at a time - which has included dogs, a cat, a pony, hamsters or bunnies...But currently all dogs. I chose to attend Logan College of Chiropractic a bit later in life as I already had two kiddos! I completed my bachelors in Human Biology in 2011 & my Doctor of Chiropractic in 2014 (Logan College). I previously worked with Dr. Matt for approximately a year in Holland. After my fourth baby, I decided to quietly work out of my home for seven years of in-home practice (while homeschooling). Now, I am incredibly excited to start working with patients here at Roots Chiropractic, while introducing pure essential oil education with coaching appointments for all!

Chiropractor
Dr. Abigail N. Bokma, D.C.
Hello! My name is Abigail Bokma, I am one of doctors here at Roots. Dr. Matt introduced me to Applied Kinesiology almost ten years ago and I’ve been passionate about bringing that depth of care to patients of my own ever since. Although I’ve enjoyed treating people across every age group, going through school I discovered a passion for prenatal care and pediatric care. Helping women through the pregnancy process and then caring for the baby after birth is such a special and unique experience. Parents are so passionate about their children’s health; stepping into that with them is powerful. I grew up locally and went to Holland Christian. I’ve been away for some time with undergrad taking me to Indiana Wesleyan University and Logan College of Chiropractic taking me to Missouri, but I’m excited to be back! I’m recently married to another West Michigan guy (Simon Bokma…he’s working here too) and we have our daughter, Mabel, together. West Michigan will always be home to these Dutch kids.

Chiropractor
Dr. Ryan S. Rappe, D.C.
Hi! I'm Ryan Rappe and I'm originally from a little town in Illinois called Mattoon. My family had always gone to chiropractors for decades, but it wasn't until I tore my ACL playing football in college that I understood their value. Originally in college, my major was mechanical engineering; during that time, a friend of mine continually tried to persuade me to change career paths. After having a rough time with calculus, I decided he was right! Meanwhile, a few years had gone by since I hung up the helmet and shoulder pads that I was experiencing unrelenting low back pain no matter which chiropractor I had went to. A couple of close friends (all of whom practice here, at Roots) encouraged me to attend a night of Introduction to Applied Kinesiology. As a result, my world changed. Getting up from the table of being worked on, I no longer had any pain. None. I had to learn how to share this with the world, so I spent the following years of my life devoted to learning to take care of people this way. I met my now wife, Alexis, while I was interning at a functional medicine clinic in Green Bay, Wisconsin. I graduated from Logan University in April of 2023 with Dr. Simon, Dr. Abby and Dr. Brandon. As a group, we had always talked about working together, but it wasn't God's timing straight out of school. So, when the opportunity arose, I couldn't turn it down. I closed my practice in Illinois, and moved here to 'winter-water wonderland'. My Chiropractic philosophy is that the body doesn't make mistakes, it compensates. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, and we have yet to discover all the body's intricacies.

Chiropractor
Dr. Brandon R. Dykstra, D.C.
My name is Brandon Dykstra and I am excited to be here at Roots Chiropractic. I grew up in Zeeland, graduated from Zeeland East; I am thankful that my career is taking me back home. In high school, I was referred to see Dr. Matt to help me with my debilitating knee pain. Having never been exposed to chiropractic care previously, I went in open minded. After a few treatments and dietary changes, I was astonished to be back playing sports pain-free, thus catapulting my passion for healthcare. After graduating from GVSU, I went off to chiropractic school and am ecstatic to be settling down in Holland with my beautiful wife, Carley and raising together our beautiful daughter, Eden. In addition to a shared passion for holistic healthcare, we both love being outdoors, hiking, biking, boating, snowboarding, playing sports, traveling, homesteading, and more. It is a joy and honor to share my passion and knowledge with you as we work together to help you improve your quality of life and find the “root” cause of your concern(s) using AK technique.
